Most of the world’s farmers are engaged in small-scale agriculture. Most small farms are located in developing countries but they are found in developed countries too. In fact, the vast majority of the EU’s 10 million farms are small farms. However we define a small farm, improving the conditions of small-scale food producers is a global objective.

De fleste af verdens landmænd arbejder i små landbrug. Selv om størstedelen af dem ligger i udviklingslande, findes der også små landbrug i industrilandene. Faktisk er størstedelen af EU's i alt 10 millioner landbrug såkaldte små landbrug. Ligegyldigt hvordan man definerer, hvad det vil sige at være et mindre landbrug, er det et globalt mål at forbedre deres betingelser.

2022 marks the 60th anniversary of the EU’s common agricultural policy (CAP). This infoclip illustrates examples of modern agriculture in three different farms in Belgium, Poland and Spain. A Familly farm in Villers-le-Bouillet, Belgium, cultivating the land and raising livestock, a family farm cultivating grain in Minaya, in the region of Guadajara, Spain and a familly farm in Poland close to Tarnow, specialised in Soja.

2022 marks the 60th anniversary of the EU’s common agricultural policy (CAP). The Familly farm "Ferme de la Croix" in Villers-le-Bouillet / Fize-Fontaine is Established in the village for 5 generations cultivating the land and raising livestock. They try to adapt the agricultural practices to environmental challenges and animal welfare. They also diversified their production, opening their own butcher shop on the farm and producing artisanal pasta. This Infoclip illustrates: cattle on the field, feeding the cattle, harvesting, artisanal pasta production and butcher shop.

Throughout the EU, millions of animals are reared in cages, in conditions that seriously harm their welfare. A European Citizens' Initiative, 'End the Cage Age', calls on the European Commission to end the practice of keeping animals in cages and to propose legislation to prohibit their use.The Committee of Inquiry on the Protection of Animals during Transport was set up in June 2020 to investigate alleged violations in the application of European Union law on the protection of animals during transport and related operations within and outside the EU, including by air, road, rail and sea. The EU dairy sector is the second biggest agricultural sector in the EU, representing more than 12 % of total agricultural output. The Farm to Fork Strategy aim to make food systems fair, healthy and environmentally-friendly. This infoclip illustrates a local farm producing their own dairy products to sell them directly to local customers using cooperative shops.

The Farm to Fork (F2F) Strategy for a fair, healthy and environmentally-friendly food system, sets out a vision for a European food system with a reduced environmental and climate footprint until 2030, that is resilient and can ensure food security and sustainability in the face of climate change and biodiversity loss.This infoclip illustrates breeding and meat precessing from local farms to cooperative shops to give customers the opportunity to buy local food.

This Infoclip illustrates the support for the agriculture sector in Belgium, showing the wholesale fruit and vegetable market BelOrta, the potato production in Flanders touched by the close down of the hotels, restaurants and cafes (horeca), the strawberry harvest and an organic farmer that organises the direct distribution via a vegetarian restaurant.

Infoclip: Covid-19 - Support for the agriculture sector

This infoclip provides illustrative images of a wide range of agricultural activities in various EU member states. In northern Italy, a farm produces organic rice in a nature area and the goal is to let the nature do its job. This biodiversity brings lots of different kind of birds, plants, insect, and fishes. The farm also built an organic digester to create their own biogas used as fertilizers in the fields. In Sweden, a farm produces fertilizers and bio fuel for tractors and trucks. In Ireland, a farmer produces winter barley, wheat and oats. He uses new technologies to manage the spreading of fertilizers in his fields. In Czech Republic, a farm produces hops on about 42 hectares. In Spain, the research center Cicytex provides services of high added value to companies in the sector of Agro-Food Technology. The Community of irrigators Genil –Cabra have participated in an EU-funded Research programme on sustainable use of irrigation water in the Mediterranean region.

This infoclip provides illustrative images of a wide range of agricultural activities in various EU member states. In Slovenia, a farm breeds wild pigs. In Spain, the Cicytex research center provides services of high added value to companies in the sector of Agro-Food Technology. Still in Spain, a cooperative is active in the milk, meat and animal feed industries, and has a strong presence in internationalization and commercial development, and a another farm produces Manchego cheese with the milk of 8000 sheep. In Germany, a family farm produces about 1700 organic eggs per day.

This infoclip illustrates the sustainable agriculture in the EU. A farm produces potatoes in the south of the Netherlands. In the north of Germany, a family farm producing large-scale organic vegetables. In the north of Belgium and South of Netherlands, a cooperative receives fresh fruits and vegetables from local producers.
