In June 2024, around 400 million EU citizens go to the polls to elect the Members of the European Parliament's 10th legislature. As the only EU institution that represents EU citizens, elections to the European Parliament are a major democratic event, and the only one at EU level that resembles national democratic electoral consultation. European elections, however, differ from the national version, as they are part of a context of multi-tier government, sometimes perceived as 'second order elections'. The main difference is that the European elections are a rather fragmented exercise, since a great part of the electoral process, including the way in which the right to vote is exercised, remains subject to national rules.

On Europe Day, the Presidents of the European Parliament, Commission and Council received the final report with proposals to reform the EU. During a closing ceremony  in Strasbourg, President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, on behalf of the Council Presidency, President Emmanuel Macron, and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen received from the Co-Chairs of the Conference Executive Board the final report on the outcome of the Conference.
This one-year journey of discussion, debate and collaboration between citizens and politicians culminated in a report centred around 49 proposals that include concrete objectives and more than 320 measures for the EU institutions to follow up on under nine topics: climate change and the environment; health; a stronger economy, social justice and jobs; EU in the world; values and rights, rule of law, security; digital transformation; European democracy; migration; education, culture, youth and sport. The proposals are based on recommendations made by citizens who met within the European Citizens’ Panels, National Citizens’ Panels and contributed their ideas on the Multilingual Digital Platform.

President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, said: "Citizens - especially young people - are at the heart of our vision for the future of Europe. They have directly shaped the outcome of the Conference. We are at a defining moment of European integration and no suggestion for change should be off-limits. We should not be afraid to unleash the power of Europe to change people’s lives for the better."

Conference on the Future of Europe: closing event

Since the closing ceremony of the Conference on the Future of Europe on 9 May, the focus has been&nbsp;on the follow-up process. Under the Joint Declaration, the three EU institutions undertook to examine swiftly how to follow up effectively to the final report of the Conference, each within their own sphere of competences and in accordance with the Treaties.

The CoFoE feedback event aims to update citizens on the outcome of the Conference, following the&nbsp;bottom-up exercise for Europeans to have their say on what they expect from the European Union.

The Conference on the Future of Europe (CoFoE) is an initiative of the European Union to reform its policies and institutions following large-scale consultations across the continent between May 2021 and Spring 2022.

The goals, principles, governance and methodology of the Conference are laid down in a Joint Declaration co-signed by the Presidents of the European Parliament, European Commission and Council on 10 March 2021.

The CoFoE inauguration event took place on 9 May 2021 in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

The programme featured a welcome speech by French President Emmanuel Macron, as well as speeches by Presidents Sassoli, von der Leyen and Prime Minister Costa, representing the EU Institutions alongside short interventions by the Conference Executive Board’s co-chairs. Contributions via video link from citizens and civil society were also broadcasted, as well as musical performances by Violinist Renaud Capuçon and Karski quartet. The launch was linked to Europe Day events across the Member states.

Erasmus students from all member states were present in the Parliament’s hemicycle, and around 300 citizens were invited to attend remotely through large TV screens. Ministers for European affairs and other VIP guests also joined remotely.

Conference on the Future of Europe – Inaugural Event

Europe Day commemorates the signing of the 'Schuman Declaration' on 9 May 1950. This was an ambitious plan to secure long-term peace in post-war Europe that is considered the beginning of what is now the European Union. In 2024, Europe Day takes on even greater significance as it comes exactly one month ahead EE2024. The EU institutions propose a wide range of activities across the EU Member States, as well as in the home of the EU institutions in Brussels and Strasbourg.
