International Women's Day 2019: statement by Antonio TAJANI, EP President

SOUNDBITE (English), Antonio TAJANI, EP President, International Woman's Day is an occassion to celebrate the most important people in our lives. Your mothers, wives, daughters and sisters. Suddenly, many are seen as victims of discrimination and violence. Even in the European Union. For this day to become a true celebration, we must continue to fight for true gender equality, to deliver a future for women free from several types of abuse, while allowing them to choose, study, express themselves or get involved in politics and to make as much as male colleagues. The 16% pay gap of precious women, must be eliminated in the European Union. The European Parliament is always at the forefront of defending women's rights. We are sure that we will not tolerate any attempts to deliberate women, first and foremost in this job. We have fought for the rights of persecuted women around the world.

SOUNDBITE (English), Antonio TAJANI, EP President, We are proud to have contributed Asia Bibi's liberation and awarded the Sakharov Prize to many courageous women like Malala Yousafzai, Nadia Murad, Lamiya Bashar. And we will not give up asking for justice for the courageous journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. A Parliamentary Committee is fully dedicated to gender equality. But, it is not enough. We need more women in positions of responsibility and more young women in politics. We will always be on your side and stop defending equality between women and men. It is not a battle of women for women. But, a battle for dignity and respect, which must be fought by all, everyday. I owe it to all of you. I owe it to my mother and her teachings. I owe it to my wife and daughter. I owe it to the women who made enormous sacrifices for women rights and to those who still suffer around the planet.
