Not so long ago, millions of Europeans lived through times when they could not vote or even speak up freely. When their very lives could be in danger simply for being different, for holding different beliefs or for wanting a different life. Democracy is a precious gift passed on to us from previous generations. They aspired towards it and fought for it. Now it is up to us to maintain it, to make it stronger and pass it on to the generations to come. Přesto se lidé se zdravotním postižením při uplatňování svých politických práv často setkávají s obtížemi. Evropská unie se jim proto snaží pomoci.

As a general rule, MEPs vote by show of hands and the President of the sitting determines the majorities in each case.

In 1979, a new high tech system was put in place. If the President decides that the result of a vote by show of hands is doubtful, a fresh vote shall be taken using the electronic voting system.

The individual vote cast by each MEP is recorded and published in an annex to the minutes.
