SOUNDBITE (English), Martin SCHULZ, EP President, The referendum is an appeal to all of us to improve our work, to make Europe better, but also to relay that especially young people, perhaps more than other people, feel that in the XXI century, the globalised century, renationalisation is the opposite of what we need.

SOUNDBITE (German), Martin SCHULZ, EP President, The decisive point is to win back people&rsquo;s confidence. The approach should not be 'let&rsquo;s have an institutional debate', no, we need to think about where the confidence and the trust of people in the institutions, in national institutions, like European institutions, where has it been lost. We need to do something in those policy areas where there has been a great loss of confidence. I could give you some examples, and I think you know this as we discussed previously, we live in a world of speculative capitalism, people make billions, and win, and they do not pay taxes on it. But when they lose billions because of speculation, then is the tax payer who pays the bill. So there the loss of confidence is massive, so for me, limiting speculative capitalism, avoidance or tax evasion, that is where the EU, with the support of the member states using European common rules could win back the confidence of citizens.

SOUNDBITE (English), Martin SCHULZ, EP President, I think to wait too long, - not triggering article 50, which is the start of the negotiation of the procedure question on how to leave - to wait too long is not healthy, either for EU, but for sure, not for the economy in the UK. Therefore I expect that David Cameron contributes to short this period of uncertainty, which leads to a lot of turbulences, especially on the financial markets.

SOUNDBITE (English), Martin SCHULZ, EP President, I think the EU should take this very serious; it is not an easy decision for one country - a strong country as the UK - to leave from the EU. We must improve the EU, we must become better, more transparent, more accountable, more democratic, more just and fair, and we must deliver concrete solutions. Therefore we need for sure a debate about the priorities, and there is a sad element: the young people in the UK voted on a broad majority to remain. This is a feeling of a lot of young people in other countries that the young generation in the UK now doesn&rsquo;t belong to EU, and this is also a chance to remobilise a positive engagement, especially from young people,, for the European project.
